Henrietta points out stars

the big discovery

Finale

Silent Sky is a historical drama about the life of astronomer Henrietta Leavitt of Harvard Observatory. I felt very strongly connected with this show, in the character of Henrietta. Her fascination with light (in the form of stars) was really what drove her story. In fact, she was so captivated by her work that by the last scene she realized she had missed important things in life. Throughout Henrietta’s story, the script calls for “stars” to appear in sequences as she discovers the universe’s secrets. I knew that the magical playground of stars she saw in her mind needed to be shown onstage in the most impactful way possible. Fully aware that this was a no-budget class-project production, my quest for sharing Henrietta’s passion (with a little of my own) led me to design and construct a custom array of 12volt pixels hidden behind a scrim and controlled via OSC commands from QLAB. The scene lighting for the show included an outdoor space, the observatory workroom, a rural home, and a mysterious oceanliner dream.
