Online Worship Experience, Season 2

After statewide pandemic restrictions lifted to a level allowing church production outside of individual member homes, Saint Andrews opted to produce a weekly arrangement of modern worship music for streaming on the church website to provide a new option for congregants unable to traditionally gather. Most of the contemporary music recorded was released as part of the “simulated-live” Sunday Modern worship services. The creative team decided to reverse the orientation of the sanctuary for this series, so that the band could space out amongst the pews. This served the purpose of improving social distance, and also made the artistic statement, “we’re out here with you.” Lighting was a crucial player in this production because the number one challenge was preventing the 1800 seat sanctuary from feeling cold and empty with 8 band members spaced out across the vacuous floor. We were largely able to overcome this dilemma by enlivening architectural features with carefully placed uplight, and using volumetric light through haze to “push” the instrumentalists out from their positions in the aisles. The Camera department favored narrower shots to make the performers appear closer together, and some songs were shot in daylight with the glass roof adding a layer of complexity. Partnering with the unpredictable sunlight required patience and multiple meter-calibrated intensity presets, but often led to excellent results.
